Beer pong: from pub sport to
mainstream sport
When they hear the term beer pong, most people think of the popular drinking game played at parties and festivals. In this game, 10 cups are filled with alcohol and have to be drunk if they‘re hit by the opposing team. What started out as a party game has now developed into a globally acclaimed sport of skill and precision. At ERDINGER, we firmly believe that the sport can establish itself as a mainstream sport in the next few years and – as the main sponsor of the BPong Bundesliga – we aim to support its development.

Beer pong: How many cups do I need?
How long is the table? A quick guide:
  • 2 or more people (usually playing 1v1 or 2v2)
  • A table (beer pong tables with the official dimensions of 240 x 70 cm are best)
  • Table tennis balls (ideally 2 per player)
  • 10 cups (width at top: 9.5 cm/height: 12 cm/width at bottom: 6 cm)
  • Water or of course beer!
At the start of the game, the 10 cups are placed on opposite sides at each end of the table in the shape of a 4-3-2-1 pyramid, with the tip pointing towards the opposing team. There are also variants with 6 or fewer cups. Each team is allowed 2 throws per round; with two players, this means one throw per player. if a team makes both shots during their turn, there is an additional third throw, known as a rollback. A ball can be thrown directly at the cup or indirectly by bouncing on the table. Each time a ball lands in one of the opponent's cups, the cup that was hit is removed. If there are only 6 or 3 cups left, the remaining cups are arranged in a pyramid shape again, with the last cup being placed in the middle. The game continues until one team has no more cups and the other team wins. When played with friends at home, there are countless house rules and variations. Of course, this is perfectly fine, but unsuitable for a professional league. The rules for official matches and tournaments have therefore been standardised – thus marking the birth of the BPong Bundesliga (German Beer Pong League).

Professional beer pong: the BPong-Bundesliga
During the years of the coronavirus pandemic, there was little for German beer manufacturers to be happy about. But for the founders of the BPong Bundesliga, it was an opportunity to take a step closer to their dream of a professional beer pong league. The reason: a beer pong match can also be played online if the right conditions are created. In the days of lockdown, this led to a huge increase in the number of passionate beer pong players – and many of them have remained loyal to the sport in the post-pandemic era. However, a standardised set of rules had to be created that could be implemented and monitored at major tournaments and online. The result is a system that works and has proven highly popular – with over 1,500 players from seven countries now competing in ten leagues. The BPong Bundesliga is on the road to success and we are confident that together we will be able to reach many more people.

After all, what beer pong and beer have in common is that they both bring people together.
